Happy Spring (I hope)! We’ve been busy, and I have several things to report. I’ve been spending a lot of time learning about (and promoting) health and wellness. After 20 years of private practice, I’ve become disillusioned as to traditional methods for treatments for heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. I’ve learned these problems are all intimately related, and I’ve been doing lots of research to try to develop a program that addresses all these issues at the same time. The article “What Makes Us Fat” is a result of that research. I plan for this to be the first in a series of articles that will be used as a basis for the wellness program. I’ve found the Berkeley HeartLab testing and a modified version of Cornerstone Wellness weight management are both excellent programs and are being incorporated into my wellness program. Stay tuned for more on this.
We’re on Facebook! I’d like to use Facebook as a tool to send out quick messages, without having to go through the process of sending a full enewsletter. I’m envisioning messages like “We won’t have office hours this Saturday”, or “The parking lot is being repaved and you can park _______”, or “We unexpectedly got another shipment of flu vaccine”. Please become a fan; I think this could be a great method of communication for quick bits of news. Put facebook link here
We are having our biggest open house yet on March 18th from 5-7pm. All the major reps will be there, we will have great door prizes, great specials, refreshments, and will be picking the winner of the basket raffle! BTW - The prices will be valid all day, so if you can’t make the open house, just give us a call during the day and we can take your order over the phone.
Finally, my new laser is finally up and running! It is primarily for treatment of spider veins. We just got it installed on Friday, so more on that later.
On a personal note, my son Dominic's trumpet trio will be featured on "From the Top", the nationally syndicated PBS radio show. They are scheduled to appear on WETA 90.9 on Sunday May 2nd at 6pm. I thought I'd include the information since some of you have asked me to let you know when you could hear him play.
To your good health!
Dr. Jasmine Moghissi

Please remember that this newsletter contains general medical information, but not medical advice. Please see me, or your regular doctor (if it is not me) to discuss these medical issues prior to acting on them.
| What Makes Us Fat
Several years ago I wrote an article about weight loss discussing energy balance and “calories in” needing to be less than “calories out”. It turns out that was a very naïve and simplistic view, and very rarely works. I’ve been doing lots of research, and would like to share some very interesting information with you. It turns out, that limiting carbs really may be the answer to weight loss and good health. This will get a little technical, but bear with me, because understanding the physiology behind fat storage is extremely enlightening when trying to make lifestyle changes. BTW -what I’m about to explain actually comes out of basic medical textbooks, and in that sense is not controversial.
